Until recently, Portland-based songwriter Matt Dorrien performed under the moniker of Snowblind Traveler, a sleepy folk project that yielded two excellent records — “Lost On The North Hills” and “Confederate Burial.” But on his latest album, he’s abandoned both the stage name and his guitar in favor of a piano and a bottle of whiskey. The new record, “In The Key Of Grey,” is an impressive collection of sadsack songs cloaked in ragtime with nods to Dorrien’s songwriting heroes Harry Nilsson, Carole King and Randy Newman.

“In The Key Of Grey” comes out via Mama Bird Recording Co. on May 18. Until then, you can hear the full thing here at opbmusic.

Matt Dorrien has an album release show on May 23 at The Old Church in Portland along with Alexandra Savior.
