Mimicking Birds Live At OPB

Mimicking Birds are perhaps Portland’s most sonically interesting band. Vague words like “ethereal,” “otherworldly” and “sleepy” often get thrown the innovative group’s way, but they don’t quite pin down its curious mix of down-tempo rhythms, complicated finger-picking guitar work and singer Nate Lacey’s nasally, wavering voice. It’s an oddly gorgeous concoction. In fact, the music is often so beautifully composed that it’s easy to miss Lacy’s lyrics.

We don’t recommend doing that.

On the band’s third release, “Layers Of Us,” Lacy probes humanity’s place in this great big universe with the eye of a poet and the mind of a scientist — he touches on everything from the nature of light and time to wrestling with our role, each one of us, in changing the climate and sparking a potentially dark future. The result is a truly thought-provoking and head-turning effort.

Mimicking Birds recently stopped by the OPB studios to play a few tracks from the new record and chat with State of Wonder’s Aaron Scott. Watch video from the performance above, and listen to the songs and the full interview below (the tracks are available as MP3 downloads).

Mimicking Birds release “Layers Of Us” on Jan. 26, via Glacial Pace Recordings. Enter to win tickets to a special listening experience for “Layers Of Us” on Jan. 25 at the OMSI Planetarium in Portland.
