Every week the Monday Mix showcases three new songs from the opbmusic broadcast. This week we feature songs from sister acts Ibeyi and First Aid Kit and another from Deer Tick’s new double album.
Deer Tick - Card House
Last month, Deer Tick released a pair of albums, aptly titled “Deer Tick Vol. 1” and “Deer Tick Vol. 2.” “Vol. 1” Is an acoustic set, while “Vol. 2” showcases the band’s gritty rock side. Card House, from “Vol. 1” features roomy sounding drums and vocals with aggressively forward folk strings. Singer John McCauley delivers verses with his signature spit and snarl, and the chorus is impossible not to sing along with. The latter half of the song gets a woozy sax solo that adds a nice extra bit of grime. Be sure to check out Deer Tick’s recent opbmusic studio session.
First Aid Kit - It’s a Shame
Sisters Klara and Johanna Söderberg return with a country-folk strum along. It’s a Shame comes from their yet to be released fourth album, recorded in Portland by producer Tucker Martine. The lyrics discuss the struggles of coping with the impermanence of relationships and is driven by an earthy, guitar-centric arrangement.
Ibeyi - I Wanna Be Like You
“I Wanna Be Like You” is the latest single from French-Cuban sisters Lisa-Kaindé and Naomi Díaz. The instrumentation combines sparse electronic drum sounds and cajon, a traditional Cuban percussion instrument. The song comes from their just-released sophomore album, “Ash”. It’s accompanying music video is simple and elegant, providing a fitting visual to the song. Ibeyi have a thing for collaboration. Last year the two were featured in Beyonce’s music video for Lemonade, and Ash includes contributions from jazz virtuoso, Kamasi Washington.
