Welcome to the Monday Mix, where we showcase new music just added to the opbmusic broadcast. This week, it’s animated work from Gorillaz, who team up with New Order/Joy Division bassist Peter Hook; a new hip-hop ballad from Portland’s Donte Thomas; and a new song from Phoebe Bridgers.
Gorillaz - “Aries”
The Skinny: Gorillaz explore their vast musical garden and into the genre of 80’s New Wave with the new single, “Aries.” Peter Hook, bassist for New Order and Joy Division, contributed an unmistakable synth sound coloring the track with warm nostalgia. The signature animated video series shows 2D and Murdoc riding a motorcycle through a sparsely populated rural town. The video concludes with a coronavirus PSA stating “Make sure you stay in, stay safe, and stay tuned. Oh yeah, and keep washing your hands. Sweet.”
Release Date: This is part of what will be a yearlong 2020 series called “Song Machine.” “Aries” was released April 9.
Donte Thomas - “SAGE”
The Skinny: “SAGE” is the latest gem from Portland artist Donte Thomas. It’s a refreshing hip-hop track with heavy reverberating bass and creative instrumentation. Thomas is a former fashion student at Lane Community College in Eugene who continues to successfully cultivate an impressive musical resume in the Rose City.
Release Date: This song is from the deluxe edition of the album “COLORS,” which was re-released in expanded form on April 10 via Portland label Eyrst Records.
Phoebe Bridgers - “Kyoto”
The Skinny: 25-year-old Phoebe Bridgers’ expressive vocals and mature songwriting are fully displayed in her single “Kyoto.” The song, according to Bridgers, was written after her first visit to Japan, and it’s about “imposter syndrome.” She says the experience inspired her as she found herself playing “music to people who want to hear it, feeling like I’m living someone else’s life.”
Release Date: New album “Punisher” will be released June 19.
