Welcome to the Monday Mix, where we showcase new music just added to the opbmusic broadcast. This week, we highlight a witty Portland-based singer songwriter, a huuuge anthem for uncertain times, and a beautifully textured folk song.
John Craigie - “Don’t Ask”
The Skinny: Portland’s own John Craigie has shared the second single from his forthcoming album “Asterisk the Universe.” This bluesy tune hits all the right notes, including a piano interlude and an infectious “clap along” rhythm. Known for his witty, lyrical style, Craigie utilizes all of his skill here.
Release Date: The full-length record comes out on Thirty Tigers on June 12.
Mondo Cozmo - “Upside Down”
The Skinny: This track is a collaboration between Josh Ostrander, who fronts Mondo Cozmo, along with members of Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and producer Butch Vig (Nirvana, Garbage). Together they’ve created a sound that could fill any room and a song that is cleverly infused with samples that harness the feel of the early work of Kanye West. According to Ostrander, the result is an “attempt at a feel-good summer song in an imploding world.” Mission accomplished.
Release Info: Mondo Cozmo’s second full-length album “New Medicine” comes out on June 12 via Last Gang Records.
Damien Jurado - “Arthur Aware”
The Skinny: The Seattle-based songwriter creates a beautiful tapestry of subtly upbeat rhythms conveyed through his gentle guitar approach. Jurado’s poetic lyrics on this mood-altering track are delivered with a soothing style and accompanied by soaring backup vocals.
Release Info: The album “What’s New, Tomboy?” is out now via Portland-based label Mama Bird Recording Co.
