Opbmusic’s Monday Mix features three songs playing on the broadcast. This week it contains a song from the prolific Oh Sees, a long-awaited release from Mountain Man and new music from Cat Power and Lana Del Rey.
Oh Sees - “C”
The band, Oh Sees (formerly Thee Oh Sees), certainly have a love of language, or at the very least homonyms. Whatever it may be, the Oh Sees song “C” (say that five times fast) is latest single off of their newly released LP, “Smoke Reverser.” The driving rhythm and keys come together in what the band calls a “psych epic” on their Bandcamp page, promising their prog-metal will “fit like a worn-in jean jacket.” For fans of the prolific band, this is just a taste of much more to come.
Mountain Man - “Rang Tang Ring Toon”
After embarking on an eight-year hiatus, Alexandra Sauser-Monnig, Amelia Meath (Sylvan Esso) and Molly Sarlé are back with the abundant charm and whimsy that made them folk darlings of the festival circuit. “Rang Tang Ring Toon” is the one of three tracks from their upcoming album, Magic Ship, due out Sep. 21. It feels like a refreshing escape, with satisfying harmonies and simple guitar, as if you’ve stumbled onto a backyard jam session. Was that a dog barking in the distance?
Cat Power, featuring Lana Del Rey -“Woman”
“Woman” from Chan Marshall (Cat Power) with Lana Del Rey is everything you might hope for. Together they are almost one voice — each one enriching the other’s soulful confidence — building into an anthemic proclamation of self. “I’m a woman of my word, now you have heard/ My word’s the only thing I truly need/Woman, woman, woman, woman.” Power’s latest album, “Wanderer,” is set to be released on Oct. 5.
