Welcome to the Monday Mix, where each week we highlight three standout songs debuting on the opbmusic broadcast.
Mikal Cronin - “Show Me”
The Skinny: Mikal Cronin retreated to a cabin in Southern California to write his new record before fires forced him to evacuate back to the city. The album’s first single has a jangly, unsettled feel with a swoon of strings pulling it forward.
“‘Show Me’ is a song about feeling small in an overwhelming world,” Cronin said. “There’s a not-quite-subtle hint of the Heartbreakers in the instrumentation and arrangement, having asked many friends to play or sing. It’s one of my favorite songs from the album, I hope you like it too.”
Release Date: “Seeker” comes out on Oct. 25 on Merge Records.
PNW Shows: Mikal Cronin plays Mississippi Studios Nov. 8.
First Aid Kit - “Strange Beauty”
The Skinny: First Aid Kit’s sister-duo Klara and Johanna Soderberg pay tribute to the late songwriter David Berman (Silver Jews), with this heartfelt original song. Berman died by suicide Aug. 7.
Release Date: First Aid Kit released two songs last week in honor of Berman: “Strange Beauty” and a cover of Berman’s “Random Rules.”
PNW Shows: None planned.
Seratones - “Power”
The Skinny: The band out of Shreveport, Louisiana, said its name is a nod to Seratonin, the so-called “feel-good” neurotransmitter. “Power” gets its alchemy with AJ Haynes’ impressive voice over a thumping bass intro and anthemic call to arms. The video was shot around several locations in Shreveport, including a confederate monument, the abortion clinic where Haynes works, and the historic center of black culture in the city called Calantheon Temple.
Release Date: “Power” was released on Friday, Aug. 23.
PNW Shows: Seratones play in Portland at Bunk Bar on Sunday, Sept. 1.
