Each week, the Monday Mix features three new songs debuting on the opbmusic broadcast.
Adrianne Lenker - “symbol”
“Symbol” is the second single released from Adrianne Lenker (Big Thief) off of her solo effort, “abysskiss.” It’s meditative, creating a trance for the listener that might have you looking in the liner notes for members of Radiohead. All the while, Lenker is weaving a lyrical landscape that one might easily miss despite sparse production. Lines read more like fleeting trains of thought: “Fly make flea make haste make waste eight makes infinity/Times I’ve tried to make breaks, embrace for the enemy.” Try to grasp each one and they’ll slip through your fingers like wisps of clouds. The album is due out on Oct. 5.
Rostam - “In a River”
Rostam, formerly of Vampire Weekend, has made a name for himself as a solo artist and producer, collaborating with artists across genres from Hamilton Leithauser (The Walkmen) to Charlie XCX. His latest single, “In a River” finds him exhibiting his production prowess in a deconstructed folk tune that takes the tropes of the genre and makes them feel shiny and new. The accompanying animation brings the viewer on a journey down the river to experience each sonic shift and texture single-player style. The combination is a study in the organic meeting electronic where sound meets sight.
Hiss Golden Messenger - “Rock Holy”
M.C. Taylor of Hiss Golden Messenger is the self-professed “man from nowhere” who reflects that music is his purpose and destination. His latest release, “Devotion: Songs About Rivers and Spirits and Children,” features music in any way you want it: a four LP box set on vinyl or CD, with digital to boot. The track, “Rock Holy,” from “Virgo Fool” blends mellow country with a soulful horn section for a listen that will have you missing summer. The whole shebang is out on Nov. 2 via Merge Records.
