Happy 2018! Today we resume the Monday Mix, to showcase three new songs from the opbmusic broadcast. This week it’s a fresh new voice from London, warm vibes from a Toronto songwriter, and a beautifully-produced slice of new 60s soul.
Nilüfer Yanya - Baby Luv
Nilüfer Yanya is a young artist from London with a beautifully breezy new song called “Baby Luv.” Some hear echoes of fellow Brit songstress Amy Winehouse, though the lightly swinging guitar/voice interplay makes Lianne La Havas a better comparison. She’s newly signed to ATO Records, so look for more U.S. shows (and a debut album) in the near future.
Bahamas - Way With Words
Bahamas is the performing name of Toronto artist Afie Jurvanen, whose new song oozes enough summertime charm to make it feel like a July day at the river. Jurvanen has a knack for smart turns of phrase (he’s highly entertaining and droll in live shows) and this song stays comfortably in the groove throughout. Bahamas’ new album “Earthtones” will be out January 19.
The James Hunter Six - I Don’t Wanna Be Without You
Back across Atlantic, soulful London crooner James Hunter lays down a beautifully-produced piece of classic R&B called “I Don’t Wanna Be Without You.” It’s from his first recording on famed label Daptone Records (home of the late Sharon Jones and Charles Bradley). In our weekly music meeting, the doubled clarinet/saxophone melody and pumps of staccato organ got us all geeked out. It’s impeccably done. New album “Whatever It Takes” is released February 2.
