Earlier this year, Black Prairie frontwoman Annalisa Tornfelt released her solo debut album, The Number 8. The album was largely financed by a crowdfunding campaign. In and of itself, that’s not terribly unique for an independent music project. However, along with the typical donation thank you gifts like signed copies of the CD for $20, Tornfelt included a peculiar perk. For a $200 donation, she offered an “acoustic recording of a cover song of your choice emailed as an MP3 to you.”

On the page, Tornfelt included this disclaimer:

Please Note: 1. The song will not be on her new record, ’The Number 8’ – it’s really meant only for you and your friends and family, etc.

Luckily for her fans, she lied. Well, sort of.

Later this month, the resulting collection of songs from that campaign is being released as a full-length album called Search Zero. “I fell in love with each requested cover song and Search Zero is what happened,” explains Tornfelt. “The whole thing felt very intimate and old fashioned.”

Search Zero comes out on October 23rd, but you can check out an exclusive premiere of one of the tracks right here. This is a cover of the classic Hall and Oates song Sara Smile:

Annalisa Tornfelt & The Sound Outside play an album release show on October 23rd at Mississippi Studios in Portland, OR along with Michael Hurley and Mike Coykendall.
