Rarely does a band enjoy such a rapid rise as Tank and the Bangas. The New Orleans-based collective, fronted by Tarriona “Tank” Ball, was unknown west of the Mississippi until they won the 2017 “Tiny Desk Contest.” Their winning entry was a video recorded in a school classroom of the song “Quick” — a revenge fantasy about a sex worker given a date-rape drug — and introduced new fans to the band’s theatrical storytelling, humor and indefatigable energy.

Tank and the Bangas have parlayed that win into national tours and festival appearances, including at Pickathon in 2017 and several more stops in Portland since then. They’re a band that can feel too big for the stage, no matter the stage, but when they return in October, it’ll be in one of Portland’s largest venues, the Crystal Ballroom. This year they released their second album, “Green Balloon.”

Tank and the Bangas will be at the Crystal Ballroom on Tuesday, Oct. 8 at 8:30 p.m. Doors open at 7 p.m. and this is an all-ages concert. Here’s how you could win a pair of tickets:
