When longtime Portland artist Fernando Viciconte released his new fall record, Leave the Radio On, it was a reboot of sorts. We had gotten to know Fernando’s earlier songs for a more easy-going, rootsy sound; the new songs feature heavier, distorted guitars and at times a psychedelic sound. Three years in the making, the new work brought together Fernando with R.E.M.’s Peter Buck, Scott McCaughey and producer Mike Coykendall; we premiered the terrific song “Save Me” earlier this year on opbmusic.
You can see Fernando play two shows in New York this week: Wednesday night at Rockwood Music Hall, and Friday at Pete’s Candy Store in Brooklyn. He’ll be back in Portland at Laurelthirst December 12th and with a trio at Boon’s Treasury in Salem December 18th.
For this session, Fernando Viciconte was joined by a veteran band of Portland players: guitarist Dan Eccles, bassist Lewi Longmire, drummer Scott McPherson, and Ralph Hunley on keys. Watch the performance above and download mp3s of the songs below.
