Ivan Howard, or Howard Ivans, is the North Carolina-born, Portland-based artist who performs as one-half of the Indie Rock duo The Rosebuds. Over more than a decade, that band evolved from spiky, guitar-based music to a sleeker sound built on keyboards and synth grooves. Howard also played with sprawling soft-rock supergroup Gayngs alongside Justin Vernon of Bon Iver, and members of Polica, Megafauna and Doomtree.  And The Rosebuds released a full remake of Sade’s album “Love Deluxe.” in 2012.

In September, Ivan Howard released a new album, reversing his name to Howard Ivans. The new project takes the ‘70s pop concepts of Sade and Gayngs and pushes even further into smooth R&B territory, with a collection of smoky original songs recorded by Richmond, Virginia, studio whiz Matthew E. White and his Spacebomb label house band. The result is a playful and crooning listen along the lines of classic Donald Fagen and Steely Dan.

Howard Ivans visited our studio late in 2017 to play from debut album “Beautiful Tired Bodies.” The band included Ivan Howard, Hugh Jepson, Ron Solomon, Jay Contonio, Mark Smith, Taylor Bolding, Brian Harvey and on saxophone, Renato Caranto.
