Portland’s famous “little orchestra” Pink Martini recently recorded a new holiday special at OPB, in partnership with NPR Music. Bandleader Thomas Lauderdale is joined by singers China Forbes, Storm Large, NPR’s Ari Shapiro, Cantor Ida Rae Cahana, the Von Trapps, and the Pacific Youth Choir. The program, “Joy to the World: A Holiday Spectacular,” includes songs from a variety of languages and traditions, everything from “Santa Baby” and “We Three Kings” to the Arabic “Talj, Talj, Ladino Hanukkah song “Ocho Kandelikas” and Auld Lang Syne.” This special airs on opbmusic Thursday 12/24 at 7pm.  In fact, it’s on all three of OPB’s broadcast services — OPB Radio, KMHD and opbmusic — at that time. It’s also on OPB Radio December 22nd at 9pm. And it’s on stations around the country this month. Or you can listen any time here.

opbmusic produced videos of several of the songs, including “Ocho Kandelikas” (see above) and others including the Pink Martini original, “A Snowglobe Christmas,” you can watch through the VuHaus player.
