When Charley Crockett sings about hard times, you believe him. Born in San Benito, South Texas, Crockett left for Dallas, labored on a farm in North California, busked in New Orleans and New York City, before being “discovered” and signed to a record deal that afforded him the chance to make a living by playing music.
Along the way, Crockett absorbed and played in the various genres of music that he would make his own. In a mid-afternoon set on the Woods Stage at last summer’s Pickathon, Crockett and his band moved deftly between country, blues, Texas swing, honky-tonk and jazz. His original song “Oh So Shaky” features his band The Blue Drifters at their soulful best.
Charley Crockett will be back in Portland April 25 to play at Polaris Hall.
Every month this year, opbmusic presents songs recorded live at the Pickathon Woods Stage. These videos are hand-picked by opbmusic to showcase some of the festival’s most exciting performances.
