This month, OPB viewers will get a sneak peek at the season premiere of All-Star Orchestra, the national series that gives viewers a front row seat to the world’s greatest music. Some of the best musicians in the country will come together to play the timeless Rhapsody in Blue by the legendary George Gershwin, along with music by Aaron Copland and Robert Beaser. Led by renowned conductor Gerard Schwarz, the all-new season of All-Star Orchestra makes for an unforgettable listening and viewing experience. All-Star Orchestra debuts Monday, September 21, at 9 p.m. on OPB.
Maestro Schwarz’s All-Star Orchestra is comprised of top players from some of the country’s greatest orchestra’s including Oregon, Washington, California, New York (the New York Philharmonic and the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra), Washington D.C., and more. Together these musicians perform on one stage under the leadership of Maestro Schwarz, who led the Seattle Symphony for 26 years and now serves as its Conductor Laureate.
“I have such a strong belief in the power and importance of great music, and I care so deeply about making it available to as many people as possible,” says Schwarz. “Our goal is to bring musical masterpieces to life through innovatively filmed performances by outstanding musicians from America’s top orchestras.”
In this exclusive sneak peek, Gershwin’s immortal Rhapsody in Blue is featured in the rarely heard original jazz-orchestra version from the 1924 premiere, led by rising-star pianist Lola Astanova. This iconic work is paired with Aaron Copland’s 1925 jazz-age classic “Music for the Theatre,” along with Robert Beaser’s “Ground O,” which offers a modern musical perspective of New York after 9/11.
All-Star Orchestra features classical masterpieces as well as new works from leading contemporary American composers, all the while keeping the listening experience informative and accessible. In addition to performances of classical and contemporary works, the programs also feature musical excerpts, images, interviews and educational commentary by Maestro Schwarz, the All-Star Orchestra musicians, and special guests.
