Stoke the hearth and gather ‘round the radio for a tinsel-flecked tour of festive music from around the globe. NPR’s All Things Considered host Ari Shapiro joins Portland’s “little orchestra” in concert for Joy to the World: A Holiday Spectacular, a new addition to the holiday music canon.
The special will air on participating NPR stations nationwide as well as internationally on Sirius XM and NPR Berlin through Jan. 5, 2016. Oregon and Southern Washington fans can hear the program on OPB Radio Tuesday, Dec. 22 at 9PM PT and Thursday, Dec. 24 at 7PM PT. Check public radio station sites for more local schedules and broadcast times. Joy to the World: A Holiday Spectacular featuring Pink Martini is also available for on-demand streaming now at NPRMusic.org.
The hour-long program, recorded at OPB studios earlier this month, will include songs from Pink Martini’s 2010 critically-acclaimed holiday album Joy to the World as well as new arrangements from the band, including the Arabic song “Talj Talj” and “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas.” The von Trapps join as guests to perform an acapella version of the traditional French carol, “Noël nouvelet.”
Shapiro, a fellow Portlander who made his debut as a guest vocalist with Pink Martini in 2010 at the Hollywood Bowl, both hosts and performs in the special alongside lead singers China Forbes and Storm Large. Additional guests include Cantor Ida Rae Cahana and the Pacific Youth Choir.
