Think Out Loud

A Carlin Home Companion

Pete Springer/OPB

class=”p1”>Kelly Carlin says growing up as the only child of the late comedy icon George Carlin wasn’t always entertaining. Her new one-woman show is all about growing up in the Carlin home and her relationship with her father. A Carlin Home Companion highlights the good and the bad in the Carlin household. And the bad was often very bad — like the alcohol and drug abuse she witnessed as a child and teenager.

Carlin says she was initially concerned about how audiences might receive less than flattering anecdotes about her father. But she says the response has been overwhelmingly positive. She says her job as a storyteller is to remind people that’s we’re all human, all imperfect — including her dad, who she calls “an amazing genius of a man.”

In addition to talking to Think Out Loud, Kelly Carlin is in Portland this weekend to appear on the public radio show Live Wire!, and perform at the Alberta Rose Theatre on Sunday.

Check out the Arts & Life story and photo slideshow about Kelly’s exprience growing up in the Carlin household.

What comedy routines stick with you from George Carlin’s performances over the years? Have you read his memoir Last Words? What would like to know about his life outside of comedy?
