Fertilizer Regulation In Oregon

Pete Springer/OPB

Between five and 15 people are dead and more than 160 injured after an explosion last night at a fertilizer plant in Texas. It’s still unclear exactly what happened, but apparently a fire at the plant spread to tanks containing anhydrous ammonia, a highly volatile gas used as fertilizer.

In Oregon, hazardous chemicals such as anhydrous ammonia are regulated by Oregon OSHA. We’ll ask how that regulation works and whether Oregon could be at risk for a disaster like the one in Texas.
