PBS Cancer Documentary Highlights Oregon Medical Breakthrough

“The Emperor of All Maladies” producer’s blog

A three-part PBS film “The Emperor of All Maladies” is airing this week on OPB and other public television stations. The second episode includes discussion of the cancer breakthrough drug Gleevec, developed by OHSU researcher, Brian Druker. Before the drug, it was not uncommon for patients who were diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukemia, or CML, to be given a prognosis of just a few years.

We’ll talk with two of the first patients to benefit from the drug — in the first human trials that started in 1999 — both of whom are still taking the drug and are cancer-free.

GUESTS:

  • Judy Orem: Leukemia survivor and former teacher
  • Doug Jenson: Leukemia survivor and retired engineering manager
