When Uber briefly began operating illegally in Portland late last year, it brought to light a conversation that had been brewing behind the scenes. That conversation — about how the city’s transportation industry can coexist with sharing economy models like Uber and Lyft — is far from over.

The city’s Transportation Innovation Task Force was convened to address the questions surrounding this issue. The task force is expected to present its recommendations to the city council in early April. While we wait to see what the task force has come up with, we wanted to hear from a Portland cab driver and someone who drove for Uber when the company was briefly operating in Portland about their experiences in the transportation industry.
