Will Matt Bors Be The Last Political Cartoonist?

Matt Bors

Editor’s Note: This show was broadcast live on OPB Plus as well as OPB Radio.

Matt Bors may be the last of a dying breed. He’s the only professional political cartoonist in his twenties in the country, and it doesn’t look like anyone else is getting in the business.

One of his first big breaks came with a cutting cartoon criticizing Steve Jobs in the immediate wake of sentimental, lionizing tributes after Jobs’s death. His recent cartoon about millennials gave him another popularity boost. In it, he criticized editors for lazy, generalizing pieces about the generation graduating and beginning careers in the wake of the Great Recession. It went viral, getting picked up by Reddit, Buzzfeed, and the Huffington Post (he later sent Buzzfeed an invoice for running the strip without paying him).

Bors’s work is liberal, but he spends as much time criticizing Obama for failing to live up to Democratic ideals, as he does lambasting conservatives.

Bors is nationally syndicated, mostly in alternative weeklies, and is a winner of the Herblock Prize for editorial cartooning. He was also a finalist for the 2012 Pulitzer Prize. He recently published an anthology of his cartoons and essays called Life Begins at Incorporation.
