New App Aims To Help Black Drivers Know Their Rights

Two Portland lawyers have teamed up with a software developer to create an app to help make drivers aware of their rights when they get pulled over. The “Driving While Black” app is geared towards African-Americans, who are statistically more likely than white drivers to be pulled over by police.

Attorney Mariann Hyland says the idea came to her after she saw a news report about an app for people pulled over for drunk driving. Her passion to develop “Driving While Black” comes from years of work in the Portland legal system, and her frustration over cases where traffic stops turned deadly.

Hyland says her team plans to release the free app in late December.

Would you use the “Driving While Black” app? How do you think it would help you?
