The committee that puts on the annual Oregon Battle of the Books competition has selected next year’s list of books. It includes a book by Alex Gino called “George,” which features a transgender protagonist. Two districts in Oregon have announced they are pulling their students out of the competition due to the content of “George.” We talk with Battle of the Books committee chair Courtney Snyder about why the group selected the book and Cascade School District superintendent Darin Drill about why his district is choosing not to participate in the competition.
