News Roundtable | Teaching Diversity At Reed | Movie Madness

Aaron Scott/OPB

  • Last year a group of students at Reed College protested nearly every lecture of the campus’ year-long freshman humanities course. The students argued that the syllabus for the class is too white, too male and too Eurocentric. They also say Reed needs to be more receptive to the needs of students of color. Earlier this fall, two classes were canceled because of protests. Reed’s dean of faculty, Nigel Nicholson and its dean for institutional diversity, Mary James, join us.

  • After 26 years, one of Portland’s last video rental stores is facing potential closure. The nonprofit Hollywood Theatre hopes to save Movie Madness and its collection of 84,000 movies and television shows. Doug Whyte, executive director of the Hollywood Theatre, joins us to discuss the future of the store.
