The girls basketball team will no longer have to be the opening act for the boys’ games. Last night the Portland Public School Board of Education voted to approve a new basketball schedule giving equal billing to girls and boys teams. The change came after Wilson High School parent Allison Horn filed a complaint alleging that the schedule of games showed unequal treatment because the girls’ games were always earlier than the boys’. Horn argued that this was a violation of Title IX, which bans discrimination based on gender. Horn, whose daughter is a senior on the Wilson High basketball team, says the earlier games also cause girls to miss more class time.
We talk to Allison Horn, Christine Miles, spokesperson for the Portland Public Schools, and Neena Chaudhry, Senior Counsel and Director of Equal Opportunities in Athletics at National Women’s Law Center.
