As of January, transgender people who are on the Oregon Health Plan can get the cost of their treatment covered, including counseling, hormone therapy, and reassignment surgery. Oregon is one of few states in the country where this is possible.

Alexis Paige was among those with  gender dysphoria who struggled to with her insurance. She told OPB she was between health care coverage for five months while unemployed and ended up selling most of her possessions in order to continue her treatment.

We’ll talk to Paige about her personal story and to Anand Kalra with the Transgender Law Center about how the Affordable Care Act is changing access to gender dysphoria treatment around the country.
