The Oregonian published an editorial Wednesday with the headline “John Kitzhaber Must Resign.” This follows new revelations in the ongoing story about possible conflicts of interest involving First Lady Cylvia Hayes. The governor held a press conference last Friday to address questions about, among other things, allegations that Hayes’s 2012 tax filing did not include the full sum of money — $118,000 — that she received from the Clean Economy Development Center. Kitzhaber reiterated that Hayes would have no role in his administration. He also said he would not consider resigning.
We’ll talk with the Oregonian’s editorial and commentary editor Erik Lukens about the decision to call for Kitzhaber’s resignation after endorsing the governor’s bid in the last election and hear from Dick Hughes, editorial page editor for the Statesman Journal. Hughes wrote an editorial Sunday saying, “There is haze — too much of it — but Oregonians dare not jump to the conclusion that there is fire. That is for the ethics commission or legal authorities to determine.”
