Ted Wheeler On His Opportunity Initiative And More

Pete Springer/OPB

Whether or not you agree with Ted Wheeler that the state should put its bonding authority towards a massive new program to help college students with their tuition, one thing is beyond dispute: the costs of college are rising. The latest five percent increase in Oregon is not as steep an increase as many had feared. Nonetheless, making college affordable again is what Wheeler says is behind the Oregon Opportunity Initiative (OOI). The proposal has moved forward in the legislature, but in the closing days of the regular session, its future is uncertain.

Although Wheeler’s put a lot of political capital behind OOI, it’s certainly not the only thing he’s been busy with. As state treasurer, he’s been involved directly with financing for the Columbia River Crossing, investing state pension funds, changes to credit union deposits and much more.

What do you want to know about the Oregon Opportunities Initiative? What questions do you have for Oregon’s state treasurer?
