Yong Zhao is an avowed critic of standardized testing — both in the U.S. and elsewhere in the world. Much of our conversation in 2013 focused on the pitfalls in his view of the Common Core testing standards. His most recent book focuses on the system and culture of Chinese education: Who’s Afraid of the Big, Bad Dragon? Why China Has the Best (and Worst) Education System in the World.
Zhao’s testing critique continues in this book. While there may be some elements of Chinese education to be emulated, he says, unvarnished praise of Chinese educational achievement (measured by test scores) doesn’t take in the big picture.
