Oregon Field Guide

Outdoor Preschool

Producer: Katie Campbell   Assistant Producer: Carolin Jones   Camera: Greg Davis   Editor: Greg Davis

Young children today recognize hundreds of corporate logos, but few can identify more than a handful of plants and animals in their own backyard.

You are about to meet a group of preschoolers who are quite different and that’s because they go to school outside. Forest kindergartens are schools without buildings. The first forest kindergarten in the U.S. started on Washington State’s Vashon Island.

This story looks at the benefits of children spending time outside and the dwindling time dedicated to recess.
