Part of Series:

Formed in a refugee camp on the Sierra Leone-Guinea border during a bloody 1990s civil war in Sierra Leone, Sierra Leone’s Refugee All Stars started as a band to lift the spirits of fellow refugees and return some normalcy to the lives of the band members. A documentary film crew followed them home to Freetown Sierra Leone to record their first record, Living Like a Refugee. The film and their first record (1994) launched them on an international tour and a following among “world music” fans. Their new record, Rise and Shine, moves the band into new territory musically and thematically. It was made in New Orleans, with a number of guest musicians from the Crescent City.  These performances were recorded at OPB’s studios in May.
