Editor's note: This segment originally aired after our Sunday Conversation with Edgar Navas, who created an alternative for immigrants who use calling cards.
For 250 years — with one notable exception (paywall) — Swedish society has been free of political censorship. To celebrate this milestone in the history of free press, a Swedish volunteer organization set up a phone number which connects the caller to a random Swede. The idea is to promote discourse and dialogue between Sweden and the rest of the world.
So, OPB's Weekend Edition host John Sepulvado called Sweden and talked with a guy named Jimmy, about immigration, politics and whether, in fact, Swedes are beautiful, but boring.
