The band The Deep Dark Woods hails from the Canadian plains of Saskatchewan. For their latest album, “Yarrow,” frontman and songwriter Ryan Boldt took the last century’s scarlet fever outbreaks as a backdrop, and wrote a record full of gothic songs about untimely death, natural disaster and loss. The songs take the shape of classic country and folk ballads. They’re impeccably played, with an adroit balance of dark subject and warm tone, as the lyrics tell stories of rising floodwaters and burying loved ones.
The album starts with “Fallen Leaves,” which channels the voices of Emmylou Harris and Buddy Miller in an achingly melancholy duet between Boldt and Kacy Anderson.
