Big Thief is a four-piece rock band from Brooklyn, New York who we stumbled upon at SXSW in Austin, TX. For most of our staff, they were the surprise of the festival, so we jumped at the opportunity to record an in-studio session with them in Portland just a week later.

Thankfully, our memories weren’t foggy. Big Thief performed an entertaining set of beautifully off-kilter songs in the OPB studios and immediately reminded us why they just might be one of the best new bands in America.

In our interview (below), the band’s lead singer Adrianne Lenker chats about her background as a folk singer, her transition to electric guitar, and the band explains how they met through an unlikely mix of chance encounters and happenstance.

Big Thief’s debut album, Masterpiece, comes out on May 27th from Saddle Creek Records, the Omaha-based imprint that knows a thing or two about folk-tinged indie rock bands (Bright Eyes, Hop Along, and Rilo Kiley).
