On June 12, 2025, the House of Representatives voted to cut off federal funding for public media.

Now the rescissions package heads to the Senate, where it needs just a simple majority to enact these punishing cuts. This unprecedented action would take away money that Congress had previously approved for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting for the next two years.

The sudden canceling of all federal funding would devastate the public media system at a time when local journalism across the country is suffering. The consequences would be especially damaging for people in rural and remote areas, where freely available, factual reporting already is scarce.

This is the moment to let senators know that you stand with public media.

They need to hear from you, your family and your friends across the country that you oppose taking away previously approved funding – money that public media organizations nationwide thought they could count on to serve their communities. For OPB, that funding makes up about nine percent of our annual budget, roughly $5 million a year.

Here’s what you can do to help:

  1. Call your members of Congress to express your support for public media. Find your members’ contact information here.
  2. Visit protectmypublicmedia.org to stay informed, sign up for updates and learn how you can take action to support public media.
  3. Make a special gift, or increase your Sustaining support to help OPB in the face of this unprecedented threat.

Our entire OPB team is so thankful for all that you do to keep us strong in this defining moment for public media.
