Partner with OPB: Freelancers in rural communities

As a nonprofit, statewide news organization, OPB aims to tell stories for communities in all parts of Oregon and Southwest Washington. As part of that goal, we work with freelancers to identify stories that might otherwise go untold, particularly in rural communities. OPB also works with Northwest news outlets to support local freelancers from areas of our region that do not receive substantial coverage. If you have an idea for a story and want to work with us, send your freelance pitches to ecureton@opb.org.

What we’d like to hear about

The more you’re able to share, the more your tip will help with our reporting. Here are some things to keep in mind:

  • OPB covers all aspects of life in the Northwest, from stories about people and places in the region to investigations revealing wrongdoing in government and private institutions. Our journalists have expertise in a wide range of areas, including politics, business, the environment, education, criminal justice and health care. If you know of a story that needs to be told, we want to hear about it.
  • OPB has reporters based across Oregon and Southwest Washington. As a truly statewide media organization, we strive to tell stories from anywhere our audience lives.
  • We also accept pitches and ideas for podcasts and Think Out Loud, as well as our programs Oregon Experience, Oregon Field Guide, Oregon Art Beat, Superabundant and All Science. No Fiction.
  • Be as specific as possible with any story tips you send to our newsroom. What happened? Who is affected? When did this event take place? If you have any documentation that might help inform us or show why your story tip is of high public interest, please include it.
  • Let us know if the tip is anonymous or should not be used until we verify it elsewhere.
  • OPB takes its journalistic mission seriously. We may not be able to report on things we cannot confirm independently.
  • Please include your name, email address and phone number if you’re comfortable with being contacted by a reporter. Being contacted by a reporter does not mean your name must appear in a story.
  • OPB receives many story ideas every day. We may not be able to respond to or pursue every tip we receive, but our staff do read every idea sent to us.

We take privacy seriously

OPB has a record of protecting whistleblowers and keeping source identities private. As one example, we fought a subpoena from the Department of Justice to turn over reporting materials that could have identified sources — and won. If you want your tip to be treated as anonymous or off-the-record, please be clear about that when you reach out, and consider using secure methods of communication when you message us if necessary.

OPB will not report on tips unless we are able to verify the details we receive. We may respond to your message to ask for more information, and to confirm that the details you’ve shared are accurate. A reporter or editor may ask you to verify your identity so that we know the details you’re sharing are accurate, but we will not share your identifiable details publicly unless you agree to be named.
