Portland police said officers contacted three people standing next to the trunk of a car at WinCo Foods. After speaking to them for several minutes, officers say Bellew retrieved what looked like a gun from the car and pointed it at the officers.

Both officers fired their handguns and Bellew fell into the passenger seat. Police say after examination, Bellew’s gun turned out to be a starter pistol.

The two people at the scene were detained and interviewed, but later released. They are not being identified.

The two officers have been identified as Dominic Lovato, an eight-year veteran of the bureau, and Michael Currier, a seven-year veteran.

They’ll be on paid leave until a grand jury decides whether to indict.

Staff from the mayor’s office and several other agencies were at the scene during the investigation.
