Kelli Schaefer - Black Dog

Portland artist Kelli Schaefer literally constructed her debut album song by song. Schaefer, and Amigo/Amiga labelmates Drew Grow & The Pastors’ Wives, alternated releasing two-song EPs over the course of a year.  For Schaefer, this process saw an evolution in style and an expansion in range from the folk simplicity of “Lasso the Moon” to the layered whirlwind of “Sister K”. As Schaefer explains it, releasing songs as singles allowed her to concentrate fully on each song as they were fleshed out, and provided reason for a new release show every few months. Her album, Ghost of the Beast, is the final installment in this series of releases and a strong artistic statement from an emerging talent.

Schaefer joined us to play a batch of songs from Ghost of the Beast, displaying along the way the wide range of sounds she has honed over the year-long process. She’s joined in performance by Jeremiah Hayden (drums/vocals) and Kris Doty (flute/bass/vocals).
