- Last week, Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents in plain clothes entered a home in Portland without a warrant and arrested a man who was working on a renovation there. Sen. Jeff Merkley, D-Ore., has co-written a letter demanding an explanation about how ICE is operating in Oregon.
For the second time in as many years, a child has died at the Broadway Children's Center. State regulators have suspended the Portland facility and plan to close it permanently. A year ago, an internal audit revealed oversight concerns within the state Office of Child Care. Brad Schmidt, reporter for The Oregonian/Oregonlive.com, joins us to discuss the recent case and the state's ongoing efforts to regulate Oregon daycare facilities.
Portland has over 1,600 unreinforced masonry (URM) buildings - old brick or stone buildings that weren't built to withstand an earthquake. The city's in the process of updating the rules around retrofitting URM buildings. We hear more about where things stand from Carmen Merlo, the director of the Portland Bureau of Emergency Management, and Angie Even, a property owner with the group Save Portland Buildings, which has raised concerns about mandatory retrofitting.
- Patrons at Multnomah County Libraries will no longer be able to bring food into the library, according to updated rules of behavior. The new rules also limit the number of items people can carry with them into the library. Director of Libraries Vailey Oehlke joins us to talk about the updated rules.
