Multnomah County Commissioner Susheela Jayapal sees a strong connection between the COVID-19 pandemic and a recent spike in gun violence in her district and many other places. According to Jayapal, the economic desperation some communities are experiencing, along with social isolation — particularly for young people — are contributing factors. We discuss prevention and solutions with Jayapal and Larry Summerfield, a community health specialist with Multnomah County’s Community and Adolescent Health Program.
