Officer named in Beaverton deadly shooting

The officer is currently on paid leave, which is standard procedure

The Beaverton Police Department identified Officer Erik Faulkner as the who shot a man during a suspect pursuit June 16. The man later died.

Faulkner has been with the Beaverton Police Department for 12 years. He was assigned to the patrol division at the time of the shooting.

The shooting happened after a burglary suspect fled on foot, according to police. Officers said they believed Shawn Michael Roy Montoya, 32, of Hermiston, Oregon, had been involved with a residential burglary earlier in the day. According to police, Montoya had an outstanding felony warrant for a parole violation as well.

During the foot pursuit, Montoya reportedly entered the fenced-in backyards of homes near the intersection of SW 14th and SW Alger Avenue.

Beaverton police officers chased Montoya. During the attempted arrest, police said, Montoya pulled a gun and shot it, resulting in a self-inflicted gun-shot wound. At the same time, Faulkner fired his duty weapon.

After the shooting, Beaverton police officers reported giving medical aid to Montoya. He was then transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Investigators from the Washington County Major Crimes Team are continuing to investigate the shooting.

Faulkner is currently on paid leave, which is standard procedure following police shootings.
