A brush fire burning near Henry Hagg Lake on Thursday prompted officials to issue multiple evacuation notices for nearby residents.
The Washington County Sheriff’s Office issued a Level 3 “Go Now” evacuation notice for the city of Cherry Grove, Oregon, about 28 miles west of downtown Portland. People in the area are advised to leave their homes immediately.
The evacuation order also extends to people living along Southwest Oak Street and Southwest Nixon Drive in Gaston, Oregon, about six miles east of Cherry Grove.
As of Friday morning, the Lee Falls Fire is estimated to have grown to 280 acres and is now 75% lined. The Oregon Department of Forestry said its firefighters were on the scene with six engines and four crews, along with two scooper aircraft that collect water from the lake.
Level 2 “Be Set” notices were issued for areas west of Lee Road and south of Southwest Sain Creek Road.
People living north of Southwest Sain Creek Road to Southwest Scoggins Valley Road were under a Level 1 “Be Ready” notice on Thursday, and that notice extended out to Southwest Stepien Road.
The evacuation zones for the Lee Falls Fire as of late Thursday night impacted more than 600 residents of the area and more than 400 structures.
According to the sheriff’s office, the Knights of Pythias Gaston Lodge was scheduled to open for displaced community members seeking shelter after 5 p.m. Thursday, and an additional shelter opened at New Life Christian Fellowship Church in Gaston at 202 Church Street. Anyone needing shelter information can call the American Red Cross for updates at either 1-800-733-2767 or 503-284-1234.
People with livestock and horses are asked to take them to the Washington County Fairgrounds.
Henry Hagg Lake Park remained closed for planes to access the water and help extinguish the fire.
