Deputies said they believed the driver was impaired, and they took the suspect to a Washington State Patrol facility in Ridgefield for a DUI investigation.

While they were in the breath-testing room, the deputy reported that a fight began and the suspect tried to take his gun. The sheriff’s office said the deputy stabbed the suspect several times.

Deputies attempted first aid afterward, but the suspect died at the scene. The involved deputy was not injured. He was put on critical incident leave.

The Washington State Office of Independent Investigations will take over the case.

The sheriff’s office said video captured by the deputy’s body-worn and in-car cameras will be reviewed and released at a later time.
