Firefighters were dispatched to the apartment complex at Northeast 104th Avenue and East Burnside Street just before 6 a.m. Although two people were rescued, most other residents were able to quickly evacuate or to shelter in place, officials said.

Crews extinguished the bulk of the flames by not long after 7 a.m., but continued to mop up hot spots.

Portland Fire & Rescue’s investigation unit is questioning someone about the fire, officials said on X. The investigation unit is composed of dual-badged firefighters and law enforcement officers.
