5.9 quake detected off Oregon Coast; no tsunami threat expected

A 5.9 magnitude earthquake struck more than 140 miles off the Oregon Coast on Thursday night, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

There were no reports of damage, and no tsunami threat was expected.

The quake struck west Bandon, Oregon, just before midnight at a depth of about 6 miles.

By Friday morning, the USGS reported two aftershocks, each with a magnitude of 3.0.

According to the USGS, magnitude 5 or greater earthquakes are not uncommon off the coast near the Oregon and California border.

Since January 2000, there have been more than 160 such quakes in the area. The most recent was just weeks ago, when a 5.8 magnitude quake struck southwest of Port Orford, Oregon, on Sept. 8.
