Washington County has declared an emergency after a landslide severely damaged Oregon Route 6 last month.
The landslide washed out part of the road near the Tillamook and Washington county line after a storm brought heavy rain and strong winds to the Coast Range on Dec. 18.
Earlier this week, the highway was closed as crews continued work to repair the roadway.
Westbound lanes have since reopened. But traffic is still down to one lane between mileposts 33 and 42, with flaggers on duty 24 hours a day to help move traffic through, according to the Oregon Department of Transportation.
On Wednesday, Washington County officials declared a state of emergency to seek federal funding for repairing the road. The board is also urging state and federal officials to implement long-term safety improvements outlined in the OR 6 Wilson River Corridor Study completed in 2023.
“OR 6 plays a vital role in connecting our communities and supporting commerce,” Washington County Board Chair Kathryn Harrington said in a statement. “This emergency declaration underscores the importance of this route to our economy and quality of life. We are committed to working with ODOT and state leaders to ensure repairs are completed quickly and that long-term safety improvements remain a priority.”
The declaration is in effect through April 6.
