After 17 days of sliding, gliding and flying across snow and ice, the Milan Cortina Winter Olympics will conclude with a closing ceremony on Sunday beginning at 11:30 a.m. Pacific Time.
The United States, with more than 230 athletes competing, has not disappointed. The team has won a total of 33 medals — second only to Norway’s 41 — including 12 golds, 12 silvers and nine bronzes.
Among the 10 Pacific Northwest athletes competing in Italy, two earned medals: Jacqueline Wiles of Portland and Corinne Stoddard of Federal Way, Washington, both took home bronze.
The international sports event was not without distraction. President Donald Trump called freeskier Hunter Hess, who grew up in Bend, Oregon, a “real Loser” after the athlete said at a press conference that “just because I’m wearing the flag doesn’t mean I represent everything that’s going on in the U.S.”
Hess did not win a medal, but as a first-time Olympian he finished 10th out of 25 competitors in the men’s freeski halfpipe event.
