Racers from Portland and beyond showed off their creations at the 19th Annual PDX Adult Soapbox Derby at Mount Tabor Park on Saturday, Aug. 20, 2016.

A giant replica of Slink, the Slinky dog of Toy Story fame, was a fan favorite.

A volunteer gives directions to a spectator. The large team of volunteers at the derby tend to the famed course, keeping viewers away from the track.

Some cars like this one are built for speed, while others are more for looks, the brainchildren of Oregon creatives.

The derby, according to its website, gives awards for speed as well as creativity. All racers are timed, but it's not just the fastest car as the sole winner.

A man emerges uninjured from his wrecked soapbox car in the portion of the course fittingly called "Blood Alley." It's the course's most dangerous segment.

A racer enters "Blood Alley," where racers pick up speed after coming off a downhill corner toward the final turn to the finish.

The car is important, no doubt, but the push is just as vital. A strong push can set the course for soapbox racers.

Team members launch soapbox cars from the starting line. The cars go downhill three at a time to maintain a safer course.

Some soapbox racers ride solo, but others like this 8-bit neon carriage take on additional people.

The 2016 PDX Adult Soapbox Derby tore through Mount Tabor Park in Southeast Portland Saturday.

Racers found creative ways to stay cool like a homemade trident hose spraying water from a soapbox car. Temperatures reached the mid-90s.

Saturday was the 19th annual running of the soapbox derby, which awards prizes not just to the fastest cars, but also the most creative.
