Albany Motorist Dead After Being Tased By Police

UPDATE (7:28 a.m. PT) – A person died Wednesday morning after being shocked with a Taser during a confrontation with Albany police. He was identified by police on Thursday morning as James F. Plymell III, 45.

According to police, a community service officer came across Plymell stranded with a vehicle at around 8:20 a.m. Wednesday, on Santiam Road at Denver Street, and requested non-emergency assistance from a patrol officer.

Community service officers respond to specific non-emergency calls, according to the Albany Police Department.

Police said Plymell initiated a physical altercation against two police personnel, resulting in him assaulting a community service officer.

Additional patrol officers responded to the scene while police said Plymell continued to fight with officers. Police said they used a Taser on him, which caused him to become “limp and unconscious.”

He died at the scene after CPR attempts from police and paramedics, according to a press release.

The Albany police officers involved in the incident were identified Thursday morning as Emily Schroff, Gina Bell and Thomas Roten, as well as community service officer Gerry Morris.

They all have been placed on paid administrative leave per protocol in the Linn County Use of Deadly Force Plan.

The Oregon State Police are leading a multi-agency investigation into the deadly force incident.
